Burger chain in Reading town centre could keep on serving customers until 4am

Wendy’s opened to much fanfare at Station Road in June 2021 after a 20-year hiatus from the UK.

The first of the new locations was the Reading restaurant, which led burger fans to flock to the town to try it out, causing long queues.

Staff at the restaurant could soon keep on serving customers for two hours longer than usual on the busiest nights of the week.

Initially, Wendy’s closed at 11pm each night. However, after successful applications to Reading Borough Council, it won permission to stay open until 2am on Fridays and Saturdays.

The franchisee has now applied to keep on selling food and drinks until 4am from Thursday to Saturday.

In order to do that, the franchises need licensing consent from the council.

A statutory consultation into the 4am food sales licensing application is currently live.

The deadline for responses is Thursday, April 17.

The franchisees were granted permission to 6.30am to 2am Thursday to Saturday under planning application PL/23/0993, but still require a licence as the sale of food and soft drinks is a licenseable activity between 11pm and 5am.

Wendy’s branches first entered the UK in 1979 but closed down in 1986.

The company had a second stint from 1988 to 2001, before the relaunch of the franchise in Reading in 2021.

Wendy’s currently has 43 branches in the UK.
